Modern-day goldmines in the ad industry: RED PEPPER's journey to the top

Uncooperative Initial Client Proven to Be a Disrespectful Individual.

Born in Yekaterinburg in 2006, RED PEPPER has marked its territory among the top Russian creative agencies, skyrocketing to fame since its inception. This agile agency, known for its innovative spirit and boundary-pushing advertisements, has left an indelible mark on the advertising industry, securing over 100 Russian and international awards (including Golden Orpheus, Kinotavr, Eurobest, and Red Apple), and appearing at renowned forums such as Cannes Lions, Vancouver Film Festival, Webby Awards, and many more.

RED PEPPER's illustrious portfolio boasts partnerships with renowned brands like Yandex, Nike, Samsung, BMW, Zolla, Ushatava, Deda Vanya, Avgvst, Rosselkhozbank, Zenit, Epica, and countless others. The agency started off in the world of advertising but underwent a significant transformation in 2016, when they decided to flex their creative muscles and delve into branded content production.

In this article, we'll be reminiscing with former advertising professional and co-founder of RED PEPPER, Daniil Golovanov, as he walks us through the agency's inception, the challenges faced by advertisers in the early days, and how the first Lions were conquered. Stand by for a thrilling journey through Yekaterinburg's advertising scene and RED PEPPER's meteoric rise to the top.

An ambitious endeavor in the heart of the city

Yekaterinburg in the early 2000s was a hotbed of opportunity for young, ambitious dreamers like Daniil. A self-proclaimed public relations enthusiast, Daniil was seeking to revolutionize the city by bringing none other than Madonna for a mega-concert. When his friend Dan, a fellow enthusiast and Miss Yekaterinburg-2004 contestant, proposed starting a company for event organization, it felt like fate had given them the revered gift. And so, the LLC "Communication Agency RED PEPPER" came to life, catapulting Daniil into the world of business.

The duo spent their days organizing a medley of events, from harsh Ural fashion shows to lavish weddings, car presentations, and even the famed cabbage-throwing championships. With few agencies in the city and a thriving populace, their business took off like wildfire. They rented an office, splurged on a few flashy cars, and decided it was high time to enter the advertising business.

Advertising at this time held a sense of liberation - even professional musicians and directors were expected to chip in with layouts or copywriting alongside their primary work, all for free. RED PEPPER seized the opportunity, pooling their resources together to rent a dozen billboards in prime locations across the city.

"Original seasoning for your business!"

This impromptu advertising campaign brought about an unexpected chain reaction, putting RED PEPPER on everyone's lips in Yekaterinburg. They found themselves reading about themselves in professional advertising media, creating a mess they had to learn to navigate. Enterprising clients, mostly from the restaurant business, came knocking for a taste of their creativity, though calculating the cost of their services proved challenging.

Crossing paths with greatness

As luck would have it, RED PEPPER found another formidable player in the advertising scene, "Voskhod," right down the street from their office. "Voskhod" was crafting wild, creative advertisements for popular brands, and even scored a shortlist at Cannes Lions - the advertising equivalent of the Oscars. Daniil, a classmate of Antion and a friend a year younger named Eugene, were already employed there as copywriters. With personal introductions to the agency's founder Andrey Gubaidullin - one of Russia's greatest creative directors - RED PEPPER found fresh inspiration, fierce competitors, and valuable lessons to learn from.

With a newfound slogan, "The Original Spice to Your Business," they eagerly immersed themselves in wooing local clients, unaware of the true cost of their creative services. Time marched on, and RED PEPPER strengthened its focus on creatives. Before long, they learned to snag tenders and sell ads at sky-high prices.

A taste of their own medicine

One fateful tender led RED PEPPER to take on an expensive project for a major oil company, with a budget fit for a Parisian feature film today. With dazzling ambition, they partnered with Darco at Radioactive Film in Kyiv, known for crafting Coldplay music videos. However, unforeseen circumstances forced them to complete the project with a different, sizeable Moscow production company.

The video's release was a bitter pill, as RED PEPPER couldn't post it on their site with pride due to unmet expectations and a collective lack of responsibility. A poignant lesson learned, yet also a watershed moment that paved the way for RED PEPPER Film's eventual transition into self-produced content under its own banner.
