New Head Coach at Sandia High School Brings Military Discipline to Football Team

Tylon Wilder, the new head coach at Sandia High School, is gearing up for an exciting football season. The team will face off against Piedra Vista, Cibola, and Volcano Vista, with Wilder expecting a slow start but improved performance by midseason.

Wilder's coaching style is heavily influenced by his military background. Having served as a Marine for eight years, including deployments in the Middle East, Wilder brings a unique blend of discipline and respect to the football field. This is evident in the way he interacts with his players, as junior linebacker Aiden Maldonado attests, stating that Wilder spends more time with the team than he does his own family.

Despite the team's youth, Wilder is confident in their potential to succeed. He guided Espanola Valley to the Class 4A state semifinals last November and plans to make Sandia a physically dominant team. However, he acknowledges that their inexperience may lead to initial challenges.

Wilder's coaching tenure at Espanola Valley lasted three seasons, during which he demonstrated his commitment to his athletes. He has pledged his devotion to the Sandia team, vowing to support them both inside and outside of football.

Before his coaching career, Wilder was a rodeo team roper in Hobbs and played football. He began his coaching journey as the defensive coordinator at Silver High, marking his first paid coaching job. Wilder also has a teaching background, having worked as a teacher for Ralph Tasker, New Mexico's all-time winningest prep basketball coach.

With nearly 100 players turning out for football, Sandia is ready for the upcoming season. Wilder's military discipline and commitment to his players promise an exciting and competitive season for the team.
