Uncontrolled water setup at Lake Straubing?
### Expanding the Whitewater Facility at Straberger Lake
The Rhein-Kreis Neuss and the city of Dormagen are moving forward with plans to develop a whitewater facility at Straberger Lake, a project that promises to bring exciting opportunities for both sports enthusiasts and the local community.
Under the leadership of district director Dirk Brüggge, the project is being developed in close cooperation with the relevant departments of the city of Dormagen and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss. An expert group, consisting of representatives from sport and construction technology, is also involved to ensure the project's success.
The proposed whitewater facility will feature engineered rapids, artificial channels, and a range of supporting infrastructure such as visitor centers, rental shops, safety stations, and parking. The design will focus on providing an exciting and safe environment for both beginners and experienced whitewater enthusiasts.
The project is modelled after the canoe park in Markkleeberg, which has been operational since 2006. A recent delegation from the Rhein-Kreis Neuss and Dormagen visited Markkleeberg to gather valuable insights and information about the park's operations and design.
One key challenge facing the project is the current canoe national performance center on the Erft, which will no longer have sufficient water after the end of water intake from the open-cast mine. The whitewater facility at Straberger Lake aims to address this issue by providing a sustainable and long-term solution for the canoe sport community.
The German Sports University Cologne and sports associations of the state and federal governments from the canoe sport are intensively supporting the planning of the project. With their expertise and resources, the facility is expected to become a regional attraction for both performance and recreational sports.
The project's planning includes discussions about the planned further development and modernization. If built, the whitewater facility at Straberger Lake is expected to boost local tourism, create jobs, stimulate related businesses, and generate tax revenue for the local government.
In addition to economic benefits, the facility will also provide social and health benefits by promoting outdoor recreation and physical activity, hosting community events and competitions, and enhancing the quality of life for local residents. The project will also incorporate sustainable design principles and improve surrounding green spaces and water quality.
The development of the whitewater facility at Straberger Lake is currently in the planning and approvals phase. If all goes as planned, construction is expected to begin soon, followed by a grand opening and continuous monitoring, maintenance, and community programming.
