Uncommonly high temperatures persist in the southwestern region of Germany once more.
Germany has been experiencing a prolonged heatwave in August 2025, with temperatures reaching between 30 and 38 degrees Celsius, and peaking near 40 degrees Celsius earlier in the month [1][5]. The German Weather Service (DWD) forecasts temperatures of around 33 to 36 degrees Celsius for this Thursday, particularly in key areas like Berlin [5].
In the past few days, some areas in the south and northeast of the country have seen highs up to 38 degrees Celsius around mid-August. A heatwave peaking near 40 degrees Celsius occurred around midweek earlier in August, with nationwide heat building through the week and thunderstorms expected to provide some relief later [1][5].
The ongoing heatwave is reflective of the extended heatwave affecting much of Europe. The highest temperatures recorded on Wednesday were in Kaiserslautern at up to 36.5°C and Bad Kreuznach at up to 36.6°C [1]. Temperatures in the southwestern states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate were particularly high on Tuesday, with Müllheim near Freiburg reaching up to 35.4°C and Rheinfelden reaching up to 34.8°C [1].
Interestingly, the temperatures in the same regions were higher on Wednesday than on Tuesday, with Rheinfelden, Baden-Württemberg reaching up to 37.0°C on Wednesday [1]. The temperatures will not be as high along the coasts for Thursday. The all-time temperature record for Germany was measured on July 25, 2019, at the DWD weather stations in Tönisvorst and Duisburg-Baerl, North Rhine-Westphalia, reaching 41.2°C [1].
The meteorologists of the German Weather Service (DWD) expect high temperatures between 30 and 37°C for Thursday, with heatwave conditions continuing, strong heat stress warnings in parts of the southwest, generally sunny weather, and isolated showers over highlands [5]. Despite the heat, some relief is expected later in the week with the potential for thunderstorms.
