Tackling the Unconventional: Christo Lamprecht's Unusual Golf Setup

Step aside, traditional golfers, because Christo Lamprecht's bag game is anything but ordinary! At the UNC Health Championship, this big-hitting South African showed the world a setup that might just take the trophy for strangest we've seen in the golfing world.

Lamprecht introduced his setup to the Korn Ferry Tour's social media, shedding light on the reasoning behind his two drivers and five wedges in his bag.

"I've been rocking five wedges for the past year-and-a-half," explained the 24-year-old, who managed to make the cut in Raleigh, North Carolina.

"Since I started playing on the Korn Ferry Tour, I needed to relinquish a club due to the sheer number of wedges. I had a driver and a 3-iron for the past year-and-a-half, but I've recently switched things up."

The change includes a semi-mini-driver (14-degree loft, shorter shaft) that seems to be working wonders for the South African. With this new addition, he has weakened his 3-iron and dropped the 4-iron from his bag.

"Consider this setup unusual—it's certainly not the norm," he added. "On this course, it fits flawlessly."

When it comes to the optimal number of wedges, this can vary significantly. Generally, the more distance you can produce, the more wedges you'll need due to the importance of playability in the scoring section of the bag.

Lamprecht averages an impressive 319.1 yards off the tee on the Korn Ferry Tour and leads the Driving Distance charts. Given the tight courses on the tour, Lamprecht's setup offers him an advantage:

"I've grown fond of the five wedges in my bag, and it's brought me considerable success," Lamprecht shared. "On the Korn Ferry Tour, a lot of courses tighten up around the 330-yard mark. My superpower lies in having fewer clubs into greens than other players."

As a Ping staffer, Lamprecht swings a Ping G430 LST driver and his 'mini driver' is none other than the Ping G440. So far in 2025, the former Open Championship Silver Medal winner has bagged a runner-up finish and two top 10s on the Korn Ferry Tour. His best performance came at the Astara Golf Championship, and he currently ranks 20th in the Korn Ferry Tour's Points List, with a spots assuring PGA Tour cards for 2026.
