Cleveland Browns Set to Kick Off Season with Joe Flacco as Starting QB
The Cleveland Browns have announced that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco will start their season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 7. The decision, made on August 18, comes as third-round pick Dillon Gabriel continues to recover from a strained hamstring, missing last week's action but participating in 11-on-11 work on Monday.
Flacco's selection as the starter is based on his impressive performance in practice and team activities. Head coach Kevin Stefanski has not indicated any intention to change the starter after the opener, but has emphasized that the backup quarterback situation remains open, with multiple QBs still competing for backup roles.
Meanwhile, rookie Shedeur Sanders, who had most of his work with the second team, is looking to continue his momentum after directing three touchdown drives and playing nearly three quarters in last Friday's 30-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers. Kenny Pickett, another contender for the backup role, has been unable to participate fully in practice since July 28 due to a hamstring injury.
In preparation for their game against the Philadelphia Eagles this Saturday, Stefanski has stated that there will be more clarity about the starting quarterback after the game and the following two days of joint practices. The coach has also mentioned that the joint practices will allow for scripted practice for the ones, while the twos and threes will get the majority of their reps in the game.
This scenario would allow Sanders and Pickett, if healthy, to get playing time in the game along with some snaps in the joint workouts. Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who was traded by Denver to Cleveland, has also confirmed that Stefanski has not yet told the team when a decision will be made about the starting quarterback.
Elsewhere in the Browns' camp, wide receiver Luke Floriea was waived with an injury designation after suffering a hamstring injury during practice. Floriea made a 30-yard catch near the sideline before the injury occurred.
As the Browns prepare for their season opener, they will be hoping for a strong performance from their quarterbacks, with Flacco leading the charge. The team will also be keeping a close eye on Pickett's progress, as well as Sanders' continued development, as they look to secure their place in the competitive AFC North division.
