New York Mets Shuffle Starting Rotation Amidst Slump

The New York Mets are facing a challenging period, with their season-altering slump showing no signs of abating. The latest development in their pitching woes is the uncertain status of starting pitcher Frankie Montas, who has been demoted to the bullpen due to ongoing struggles.

Montas, who joined the Mets in mid-June, has posted a 6.38 ERA over eight games. His most recent outing, against the Milwaukee Brewers, was far from impressive, as he allowed three runs (one earned) in three innings, giving up three hits. This poor performance has made the decision to lift him from the rotation more difficult, given the lack of success from the rest of the starting staff and the non-existent depth.

The Mets have not announced their rotation for the series against the Atlanta Braves from Tuesday through Thursday. However, it's clear that Montas will not be starting on Friday against the Seattle Mariners. He is expected to serve as a reliever and likely work as a long man out of the bullpen, starting Thursday against the Braves.

The Mets' decision to demote Montas is a reflection of their ongoing difficulties with their starting pitching depth. Since mid-June, the Mets have not had a starting pitcher other than David Peterson complete six innings in a game. The team's depth options, Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn, have not provided the consistency the team needs.

In light of these challenges, the Mets are considering calling up a top pitching prospect to spark some life back into a listless team. If Montas is indeed shelved, the Mets might call up one of their top pitching prospects, either Brandon Sproat or Nolan McLean.

Griffin Canning, a potential option for the Mets, is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles. Meanwhile, Reed Garrett served as the opener for the Mets in the game against the Milwaukee Brewers instead of Montas.

As of now, Frankie Montas is still in line to play in the game against the Seattle Mariners. However, his role in the game is likely to be different, with the Mets opting to use him as a reliever rather than a starter. The Mets will need to find a reliable option to fill his spot in the rotation, as they aim to turn their season around.

The Mets are contemplating a roster change, with the possibility of calling up a pitching prospect like Brandon Sproat or Nolan McLean to revitalize their struggling team, given the ongoing struggles of their starting rotation. Despite Montas still being slated to play against the Seattle Mariners, his role has been altered, as he'll now serve as a reliever instead of a starting pitcher.
