Uncertainty Prevails on the Most Controversial Ice Hockey Dressing-Room Decision Ever Made in the NHL

Layin' It All Out:

Catch the heat in the frozen world of ice hockey where the ultimate humiliator of a penalty is none other than embellishment. This ain't the NBA or soccer, where floppers shine, no way, not in the NHL. Here, divers are as unwelcome as a pufferfish at a shark party, and that's a fact. Now, that unlucky chap Evan Rodrigues found himself in the crosshairs of the most absurd embellishment call in NHL history.

The Hairless Beavers and the Sun-Baked Sandworms clashed in Game 2 of their second-round war on May 8, 2025, with a nastier than a hornets' nest fight guaranteed – or so we thought.

As predicted, the game was as brutal as a construction site, and at the 8:18 count of the second period, chaos erupted when Smelly Laughton from the Beavers sent Rodrigues spiraling head-first into the cold, unforgiving boards.

Now, the hit wasn't exactly textbook ambush, but the scene wasn’t pretty; Rodrigues was clearly jolted by the collision – enough to clear the ice and make a beeline for the Beavers' dressing room.

What followed next, though, was a heck of a surprise: the penalties were called out, and as Rodrigues made his way back for a tour of duty, the news flashed like lightning that our unlucky friend was given a minor penalty for embellishment.

That was a mighty confusing call. Rodrigues' graceful swan dive into the boards could maybe warrant a boarding penalty, but the embellishment part? I can't claim to see what the referees were picking up – that's why I'm asking y'all to tag me on X (@matt_reigle)!

I must say, I'm not the only one asking the same question:

They say Rodrigues had a bit of a use-it-or-lose-it moment during his comeback, and according to Sportsbet, the Sun-Baked Sandworms' coach, Paul Maurice, couldn't for the life of him figger out the reasoning behind the call.

Fast-forward to now, the Sandworms have bigger concerns than ghostly embellishment calls – like catching up in the series after losing the second game at a 4-3 scoreline, with Game 3 moving to Miami where they're nursing a 2-0 series deficit.

  1. In the NHL, unlike the NBA or soccer, embellishment is not tolerated, and divers are discouraged.
  2. Evan Rodrigues was assessed a minor penalty for embellishment in a game between The Hairless Beavers and the Sun-Baked Sandworms, a call that baffled both Rodrigues and the Sun-Baked Sandworms' coach, Paul Maurice.
  3. The controversial embellishment call has become a hot topic in sports, with many questioning its validity, including me, Matt Reigle, who is posting about it on X (@matt_reigle).
  4. Despite the embellishment controversy, the Sun-Baked Sandworms now face larger issues, such as catching up in the series and trying to overcome a 2-0 series deficit in Game 3, which is moving to Miami.
