In Sterkrade, a vibrant subdistrict of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region, the spirit of transformation is in the air. District Mayor Ulrich Real recently presented a vision for Sterkrade's future titled "Sterkrade and Its Subdistricts on the Way to the Future."
The presentation was preceded by a warm message from Jörg Schröder, who wished the members of the local branch a productive collaboration during their upcoming relaxing weekend.
The image and marketing concept for Sterkrade is "Strong, Stronger, Sterkrade," reflecting the district's commitment to growth and improvement. This vision is evident in the various urban renewal projects currently underway.
One such project is the redesign of the small market into an open market without boundaries, adorned with numerous trees and a fountain. The redesigned areas on Tirpitz and Garten streets now offer playgrounds for children, seating areas, and have become attractive gathering places for residents.
The redesign may also include new kiosks with outdoor gastronomy, green gathering places, or well-conceived parking options.
Another significant project is the redesign of the district entrances at Volkspark, Neumarkt, the old town hall, Arnold-Rademacher-Platz, and the train station, aiming to create inviting gateways to the city center.
Moreover, the new construction of a multi-family house with commercial spaces on the site of the old Kaiser & Ganz building is in progress.
However, challenges loom large with projects like the expansion of the Sterkrade train station, which includes the architectural concept "Lichtwelten," and construction measures on the L215n in the Weseler/Weier Street area in connection with the expansion of the BETUWE line. These projects pose great challenges for the city and its citizens.
Efforts are ongoing to reach agreements with the owners of vacant properties in the Sterkrade city center, including the furniture store (Segmüller) and the Max-Bahr and Kaufland properties (Hirsch Group).
A neighborhood library with an outdoor garden, repair café, seminar rooms, and an e-bike charging station has already been established, adding to the district's growing list of amenities.
While specific details about Sterkrade's urban development plans are not readily available, Germany as a whole is witnessing a wave of urban development, with a focus on sustainable urban planning, infrastructure renovation, and housing development. These broader trends suggest that Sterkrade is part of a larger movement towards modernization and growth.
