Olympic cricket qualification system throws uncertainty on intense India-Pakistan competition at LA28 games

Uncertainty casts shadows over India-Pakistan Olympic cricket matches, as the qualification system raises questions about their long-standing rivalry at LA28.

After a 128-year absence, cricket is set to return to the Olympics, with the tournament scheduled for Los Angeles in 2028. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is introducing a new qualification system for these events, prioritising geographical diversity over world rankings in team selection.

Under this regional plan, the top-ranked teams from each of the ICC's regions — Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Africa — will secure automatic qualification spots. This method resembles the regional qualification format used for ICC T20 World Cups. Six teams will compete per gender, each with up to 15 players.

This system has drawn some controversy because it could lead to significant cricket nations like Pakistan and New Zealand missing out on automatic qualification if they are not top-ranked in their respective regions. For instance, India's strong ranking in Asia likely assures its qualification, but Pakistan could miss out despite its history.

Regarding the potential India versus Pakistan match, the current qualification format based on regional top teams and rankings suggests that whether Pakistan qualifies depends on their ranking within Asia. If Pakistan does not qualify, naturally no India-Pakistan Olympic cricket match will occur. The format’s focus on regional qualification implies less influence from traditional bilateral rivalries in the Olympic tournament.

The tournament itself will feature double-headers at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, near Los Angeles. Matches are scheduled from July 12 to 29, with medal matches beginning July 20 for women and July 29 for men.

However, the specific details of the new qualification system have not been fully disclosed yet. It remains unclear how the final spot will be decided for each region, leaving some uncertainty for teams like the West Indies, who could have trouble because the USA is automatically in.

Despite the uncertainties, the Olympics cricket tournaments are generating excitement among cricket fans worldwide. The potential exclusion of a high-profile India vs Pakistan match is a distinct possibility if both do not qualify.
