Uncertain future may find a more conservative European Union emerging
A New Era for the European Union: The Results of the Recent Elections
The European Union has a new parliament following the recent elections, with significant shifts in the political landscape. The European People's Party (EPP) emerged as the largest party, increasing its representation to 186 seats. The European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) also saw an increase, securing 73 seats.
Meanwhile, the Green party experienced a slight setback, falling from 72 to 53 seats. On the other hand, the Socialists and Democrats obtained 135 seats, four fewer than in the previous term.
One of the most notable developments is the rise of more conservative forces. This trend is evident in the Identity and Democracy (ID) group, which celebrated an increase of 9 seats to reach 58. Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party in France won over 30% of the vote, marking a significant shift in French politics.
However, the story doesn't end with these major parties. The European Christian Political Movement (ECPM) also saw some changes. While some small parties maintained their seats, the ECPM will welcome a new representative from Latvia, Vilis Kristopans of Latvia First. Notable ECPM members who retained their seats include Bert-Jan Ruissen from the Netherlands (Reformed party SGP), Helmut Geuking from Germany (Party of the Families), and Cristian Terhes from Romania (National Conservative Party).
In France, President Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the French parliament and a snap election for 30 June. Meanwhile, in Belgium, the centrist Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, announced his resignation after obtaining only 7% of the vote. However, there has been no indication that any party replaced him following the European elections, with Alexander De Croo remaining Prime Minister.
In other news, the #OneMoreYearEF campaign was launched at Evangelical Focus, aiming to gather those committed to their mission across Europe and beyond. More details about the campaign can be found on the Evangelical Focus website.
