Unbeaten Whitney girls volleyball team holds off determined Artesia squad in league match, maintaining winning streak

In a closely contested match, the Whitney High girls volleyball team emerged victorious against Artesia High on September 25, 2024. The win improves Whitney High's overall record to 16-7 and maintains their undefeated streak in league play at 4-0.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Moyher led the charge for Whitney High with 7 kills, while sophomore Emma Prowse added 7 kills and 5 aces to the team's tally. The match saw multiple lead changes and ties, making it an exciting and intense game for both teams.

Artesia High's senior wide receiver Julius Padilla caught three passes for 107 yards, while senior quarterback Charlie Lopez completed four passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns. However, these efforts were not enough to secure a win for Artesia High.

Meanwhile, in football, Artesia High's team remains undefeated after a 41-7 win over Mountain View High. Nine different ball carriers combined for 298 yards, with Jeff Brown, the team's senior running back, leading the way with 282 yards and three touchdowns.

As for Whitney High, the victory against Artesia High brings them one step closer to reaching the CIF-Southern Section playoffs for the first time since 2019. Last season, the team finished fourth with a record of 13-17, 5-5. Despite this, Whitney High has yet to win a league title since 2000.

Whitney High will host Oxford Academy on Friday to end the first half of league play. As the team continues to build momentum, fans are eager to see if they can maintain their winning streak and secure a spot in the playoffs.

Elsewhere, Estancia High recorded their second shutout of the season with a 38-0 win over Santiago High. Quarterback Heriberto Sanchez Martinez was six of seven for 63 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Westminster High, on the other hand, has struggled in their last two games, being outscored 69-35. Irvine-based University High, however, has turned things around, including a 24-21 overtime win over Garden Grove High.

With the league season heating up, it's an exciting time for high school sports in the area. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next round of games to see how the teams will fare.
