Unanticipated surge in mortality rates reported by local law enforcement.

The first half of 2025 has seen a concerning increase in traffic accidents in the Ravensburg Police Presidency area, particularly involving vulnerable road users such as cyclists, motorcyclists, pedelecs, and e-scooter riders.

According to recent data, there has been a 13% increase in traffic accidents resulting in injuries compared to the same period last year. This trend is attributed to several key factors.

Firstly, the rising use and popularity of bicycles, pedelecs, and e-scooters increase exposure and interaction with motor vehicles on the road. As these vulnerable road users proliferate, accident risks escalate if infrastructure and awareness do not keep pace.

Distracted driving, riding, and walking also play a significant role in these accidents. Reduced attention to surroundings among all road users can lead to tragic consequences. Many regions have enacted bans on texting while driving or walking, reflecting the importance of maintaining focus on the road.

Non-compliance with helmet laws is another concern. While helmet use can reduce injury severity by up to 70%, many cycling-related fatalities occur when riders are not wearing helmets. The enforcement and scope of helmet laws vary by locale.

Environmental and infrastructural factors, such as unsafe road conditions or maintenance issues, can also contribute to the rise in accidents. Although the recent major accident in the southwestern Baden-Württemberg area was related to a train derailment caused by an overflowing sewer and landslide, it highlights regional infrastructure vulnerabilities.

In response, the police and authorities are taking preventive measures. These include education and safety awareness campaigns, enforcement of helmet laws where applicable, legislation banning distracted driving and walking practices, and ensuring infrastructure safety and maintenance.

The police in Ravensburg plan to strengthen surveillance and control measures, particularly for two-wheelers, and intensify preventive measures. Police spokesman Oliver Weißflog stated that the reasons for the high number of accidents are not yet clear.

Preliminary findings suggest a 46% increase in people injured in accidents involving pedelecs, a 32% increase in motorcycle-related injuries, and an 83% increase in total accidents involving e-scooters. The Police President emphasises the importance of self-critical behavior from road users, encouraging safe driving, concentration, and sobriety.

The prolonged good weather in the spring of 2025 may have contributed to the increase in traffic accidents. It's worth noting that e-scooters are considered motor vehicles, and the same limit values apply as for car drivers.

The increase in traffic fatalities has risen from 12 to 19. About half of all severely injured people in bicycle or motorcycle accidents were driving alone. Lack of driving experience, self-overestimation, driving errors, influences of alcohol and drugs, and failure to adapt speed are factors in these accidents.

Ten percent of those involved in e-scooter accidents were under the influence of alcohol. The number of accidents involving cannabis use has increased fivefold, which the police attribute to partial cannabis legalization.

Despite the rise in accidents, it's worth remembering that 2024 saw fewer traffic accident deaths than any other year in the past. The focus remains on education, enforcement, and infrastructure improvements to ensure the safety of all road users in Ravensburg.

  1. To combat the increase in traffic accidents, particularly those involving bicycles, pedelecs, and e-scooters, the police in Ravensburg are planning to strengthen surveillance and control measures, as well as intensify preventive measures for two-wheelers.
  2. In the first half of 2025, there has been a concerning increase in general news stories about car-accidents, especially those involving vulnerable road users such as cyclists, motorcyclists, pedelecs, and e-scooter riders, in the Ravensburg Police Presidency area.
  3. In response to the rise in traffic accidents, the police and authorities are taking preventive measures, including education and safety awareness campaigns, enforcement of helmet laws where applicable, legislation banning distracted driving and walking practices, and ensuring infrastructure safety and maintenance.
  4. While helmet use can reduce injury severity by up to 70%, many cycling-related fatalities occur when riders are not wearing helmets, and non-compliance with helmet laws is another concern.
