Unacceptable Condition: City Council Leaves Families and Children Exposed to Cold Weather Nights

António Filipe, a candidate described as cross-partisan and backed by the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), has officially launched his bid for the 2026 Presidential elections. His campaign focuses on challenging the right's hegemony in sovereignty bodies by emphasising a political and social platform rooted in leftist and progressive values.

Filipe's campaign strategy is framed as a necessary intervention to break the right-wing political dominance in institutions that control sovereignty. According to the PCP, Filipe's campaign highlights the following main elements:

1. Upholding the values of the April Revolution, including workers' and people's rights, equality, social justice, national sovereignty, and independence. 2. Defending sovereignty and national interests against what he views as powerful capitalist and militarist forces, especially from the United States and other G7 countries, which the PCP opposes. 3. Presenting himself as a candidate who brings seriousness, integrity, and dedication to democracy and sovereignty. 4. Mobilising the people against exploitation, inequality, and injustice, and fighting reactionary projects often associated with right-wing dominance. 5. Advocating for peace, collective security, and cooperation while opposing militarism and war. 6. Stressing the need for the Presidency to respect and comply with the Constitution and to actively fulfil the democratic and social aspirations enshrined in it. 7. Standing as a voice for workers, youth, and the popular classes in order to counterbalance the current hegemony of right-wing forces in the sovereignty bodies of the Portuguese state.

The PCP communiqué emphasises that this campaign is a necessary step to reclaim sovereignty institutions from the right's control. Filipe's vision is consistent with the April Revolution's legacy, constitutional respect, and popular mobilisation.

In a recent discussion on the podcast "Does it Matter if Repeated?", Filipe's candidacy was also highlighted. The podcast, however, did not provide direct references to the campaign's specific details.
