Hailing from a small town south of Hannover, Mertesacker once joined the youth team of local powerhouse team Hannover 96, and later became a professional and national player under their banner. After stints with Werder and Arsenal, Mertesacker is now set to make a comeback, taking the pitch alongside his childhood team.

"It's an incredible privilege to strap on the shoes once more for the club where I first kicked a ball at the age of 4" Mertesacker share with "Bild". "I'm in reasonable shape, and I'm planning to make an appearance in the starting lineup and play at least 30 minutes."

However, Mertesacker does not anticipate making a regular return to the sport. "Regular play is not an option for me," he explained. "But my TSV Pattensen pass remains valid, in my eyes."
