A heightened level of conflict looms between the US and the Houthi militia in Yemen. The White House is stepping up pressure against Iran and its allies, including the Houthis, with the Trump administration's recent offensive. The Houthis have retaliated, with their leaders concealing themselves in rural hideouts and ordering more attacks.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, former President Trump made explicitly clear that any fire from the Houthis would be considered as coming from Iran's weapons and commanders. This assertion was followed by a warning of severe consequences, stating, "The repercussions will be horrendous!" Previously, Iran had warned of strong countermeasures.
According to US media, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt declared, "The hell will break loose for all terrorists in the Middle East – the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran-backed terror proxy groups, and Iran itself – should absolutely heed President Trump's grave warning." The US president clarified that any individuals intending to terrorize not only Israel but also the United States would have to face repercussions.
The Hornet's Nest: US and Houthis Face Off
Trump claims that Iran, rather than being a victim to terrorists, is pulling the Houthis' strings. Since Saturday, under Trump's orders, the US military has been conducting heavy airstrikes against the militia, with media outlets reporting renewed air attacks on the port city of Hudaida and the capital Sanaa throughout the night. At least 53 fatalities have been reported as a consequence, according to previous Houthi statements. Similar to Israel’s actions in Gaza Strip against Hamas, the US military is now targeting the leaders of the militia as part of their anti-Houthi campaign.
In a recent announcement, the Houthis declared their intention to recommence attacks on ships in the Red Sea, with the aim of ending Israel's blockade on the Gaza Strip. The United Nations urged both sides to exercise restraint and cease all military activities, warning that any further escalation could lead to retaliation, potentially destabilizing the region.
Out of Sight, Fueling the Fight
Commander of Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), Hussein Salami, labeled the US as acting as the "innocent victim" of uncontrollable terrorists, while Iran is the one ultimately controlling the Houthis' actions. Tehran flatly rejected any interference in its Middle East policy by the US, as stated by both Salami and IRGC spokesperson Ismail Baghaei.
