UN Ready to Aid Gaza as US Peace Plan Proposes UN Role in Distribution
The UN was not involved in drafting US President Donald Trump's peace plan for the Gaza Strip. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has been trying to aid Gaza since the Israeli war against Hamas began in 2023, but faces obstacles.
OCHA has been attempting to coordinate aid in Gaza since the war started. However, it faces Israeli obstructions and bureaucratic requirements that hinder aid convoys. Despite these challenges, OCHA has the structures in place to start supplying aid as soon as Israel gives the green light.
Point 8 of the US peace plan states that distribution and assistance in Gaza will be carried out without interference by either party through the UN and its agencies. This could potentially resolve some of the issues OCHA is currently facing. Meanwhile, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), linked to the USA and Israel, has been distributing food under armed guard at points designated by Israel for several months. According to the US plan, the GHF's role might change or cease under the new arrangements.
The UN, particularly OCHA, stands ready to aid Gaza as soon as Israel allows. The US peace plan, while not involving the UN in its drafting, does propose a role for the UN in aid distribution. The future role of the GHF in this process remains unclear.
