UN Debate Address Via Video for Abbas Despite Denial of US Visa
The United States has revoked the visas of several representatives from the Palestinian Authority (PA), but this decision will not impede Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' virtual participation in the upcoming UN General Debate and the conference on the two-state solution.
Abbas will be permitted to address the UN General Assembly's debate next week via video, despite the initial denial of his visa by the USA. The United Nations granted this exception, taking into account the circumstances.
The resolution allowing Abbas' virtual speech was supported by a majority of the UN General Assembly's member states, including Germany. This decision was made in response to the USA's refusal to issue a visa to Abbas for a personal appearance.
Under normal circumstances, the USA issues visas to all representatives of countries traveling to the UN headquarters in Manhattan according to a contract with the United Nations. However, the USA has decided not to issue new visas to representatives of the Palestinian Authority.
Due to the revoked visas, Abbas and other representatives of the Palestinian Authority will not be able to attend the General Debate in person. However, the resolution passed by the UN General Assembly pertains specifically to Abbas' participation in the UN General Debate and the conference on the two-state solution.
Abbas' virtual speech at the UN General Debate is scheduled for Thursday, while the conference on the two-state solution is set for Monday. Abbas will also be giving a virtual speech at the latter event.
The USA's actions against the Palestinian Authority representatives are a part of the ongoing conflict between the USA, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority. The Trump administration stands firmly with Israel in the Gaza conflict.
Despite the ongoing tensions, the UN General Assembly's largest body has granted Abbas the exception to appear at these important events virtually. Personal appearances by representatives are normally only allowed at the General Debate with nearly 150 heads of state and government.
This decision by the UN General Assembly is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Middle East. The conference on the two-state solution, in particular, is expected to provide a platform for discussions on potential solutions to the long-standing issue.
