UN Calls for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire as Conflict Displaces 400,000
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, as the conflict has displaced around 400,000 people and put hundreds of thousands more at risk of famine and harsh winter conditions. Guterres welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement for a ceasefire and lasting peace in the region.
The UN Secretary-General stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid and prevent a worsening crisis. Around 400,000 people have fled from northern Gaza to the overcrowded Al Mawasi area, exacerbating the displacement crisis. Guterres called on all parties to commit to and implement the agreement to alleviate the immense suffering caused by the conflict.
UNICEF has warned that a ceasefire is also essential to provide shelter for children and families as winter approaches. The agency has highlighted the urgent need for a truce to allow for the delivery of aid and prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
Guterres expressed hope that these steps would pave the way for a two-state solution, ending the long-standing conflict in the region. He reiterated his call for an immediate and permanent united ceasefire, unrestricted humanitarian access across Gaza, and the unconditional release of all hostages. The UN continues to monitor the situation and work towards a peaceful resolution.
