Ultramarathon feat of Graeme Thomas: 43-mile running challenge after rowing
In the picturesque town of Exmouth, Graeme Thomas, a two-time Olympic finalist from Preston, will embark on a challenging journey tomorrow morning (Saturday). The Salmon Run, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about issues facing British waterways and the endangered Atlantic salmon, will see Thomas run along the Exe River.
Thomas, who grew up near the River Ribble, has expressed his excitement about the challenge, despite admitting that he hasn't had enough training for the ultra-distance run. He is no stranger to long distances, however, as he is an avid cyclist and enjoys bike packing.
The Salmon Run, organised by Tidelines, a community organisation, will follow the river right the way to Dulverton. The first 20km of the route are flat, but the course then heads towards Exmoor National Park and the hills, promising a challenging terrain for the participants.
The event aims to bring together river users, ecologists, artists, conservationists, local people, and others involved with the landscape and the river. The Salmon Run coincides with The Rivers Trust's Big River Watch, a nationwide citizen science initiative to protect rivers across the UK.
The Big River Watch app, which is free to download and available for public use, is a visual exercise that takes ten minutes. It helps identify and locate river issues, providing valuable information for The Rivers Trust to better understand the quality of rivers in the UK. The app will run from September 19 to September 25, 2025.
The Rivers Trust's goal is to raise funds and awareness for restoring and protecting wild, healthy, and natural rivers to support the endangered Atlantic salmon's migratory journey and habitat. All 68 of the UK's salmon rivers are facing issues and a decline in the number of salmon.
If you wish to support Graeme Thomas's efforts, you can donate to The Rivers Trust via a provided link. Your contribution can help make a difference in preserving the UK's rivers and the Atlantic salmon population.
Thomas's fueling strategy for the Salmon Run involves complex carbohydrates in the first four hours and simpler and simpler foods and sugars as he gets closer to the end. He is determined to complete the run and raise awareness for the important cause.
Join Graeme Thomas and The Rivers Trust in their mission to protect and conserve the UK's rivers. Together, we can make a difference for the future of the Atlantic salmon and our waterways.
