Ulm's trainer Lechleiter in focus
In a surprising turn of events, SSV Ulm has announced the dismissal of Head Coach Robert Lechleiter, effective immediately. The decision comes after a challenging start to the season, with the team currently sitting just above the relegation places before the seventh matchday.
Lechleiter, who took over the professional team at SSV Ulm in March of the previous year, replacing Thomas Wörle, instilled a new spirit in the team and brought them close to survival. However, the start of the season hasn't gone as planned, leading to the club's decision.
Moritz Glasbrenner, the U19 coach, will temporarily take over the professional team. Glasbrenner, an immediate candidate for the position, has shown promise and will lead training and matches while discussions regarding potential successors are ongoing.
The team has been plagued by injuries this season, with both the captain, Johannes Reichert, and new signing Dominik Martinovic, suffering cruciate ligament ruptures and being out for months. Martinovic's injury occurred this season, adding to the team's woes.
The club's board member and CEO, Markus Thiele, explained that the decision to relieve Lechleiter of his duties was difficult due to his past contributions. Lechleiter managed the team in 19 competitive games, during which he couldn't prevent relegation from the second to the third tier. Despite this, he managed to stabilize the team at times during his tenure.
The match against SSV Jahn Regensburg this Sunday is a crucial one for SSV Ulm. Both teams are struggling, and the outcome could significantly impact their respective positions in the league. Tuesday's 1:3 loss to 1. FC Saarbrücken was Ulm's third defeat in the last four league games, adding to the pressure on the interim coaching team.
Lechleiter, who previously worked in Ulm's youth academy, stated that he was disappointed with the results but understood the club's decision. His assistants, Matthias Lust and Christoph Kappel, have also been released from their duties at SSV Ulm.
As Ulm navigates through this challenging period, the focus will be on regaining form and securing their place in the second tier. The interim coaching team, led by Glasbrenner, will aim to rally the team and turn the tide in their favour. The upcoming match against Regensburg presents an opportunity to do just that.
