Two southwest German cities are set for a change in leadership after run-off elections: Ulm and Leinfelden-Echterdingen. In Ulm, incumbent Gunter Czisch (CDU) will vacate his post, with Martin Ansbacher (SPD) emerging victorious with 55.11% of the votes. Ulm's Mayor-elect Ansbacher was surprised by the clear outcome, looking forward to closer citizen engagement and tackling challenges together. Meanwhile, in Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Otto Ruppaner (non-party), supported by the Free Voters, will assume office with 53.28% of the votes. The incumbent, Roland Klenk (CDU), announced his resignation earlier this year, having served as mayor since 2001.

Gunter Czisch conceded defeat on election night, acknowledging that Martin Ansbacher likely won over many votes initially cast for Lena Schwelling, the state chairwoman of the Greens. The regional council in Tübingen is currently examining an objection against the Ulm mayor election, with non-party candidate Daniel Langhans questioning alleged discrepancies in his vote share of 2.62%.

Otto Ruppaner, the new mayor of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, succeeded Raiko Grieb (SPD), who ran as an independent candidate, winning 46.72% of the votes. Ministerialrat Grieb was supported by the SPD but still fell short in this closely contested election.

Ulm and Leinfelden-Echterden's upcoming municipal elections could see a significant electoral shift, with the CDU, SPD, and Greens expected to hold sway in the Southwest region, much like in other parts of Germany.
