Lithuanian Volunteer Tomas Valentėlis Dies in Combat in Ukraine

Tomas Valentėlis, a Lithuanian volunteer, lost his life while serving in the Ukrainian forces, fighting against Russia in the ongoing conflict. The specific battle or location where he was killed has not been widely disclosed, but it is known that he died during military engagements in the Kupiansk district in north-eastern Ukraine on March 13.

Valentėlis was part of a group of foreign volunteers from around the world who have joined Ukraine's defense efforts. Lithuania, in particular, has shown strong support for Ukraine, with several Lithuanian nationals like Tomas making the journey to fight.

The circumstances surrounding Valentėlis's death are tragic. According to reports, he and another volunteer made a fatal mistake by crossing an open area, which led to their detection by a Russian drone. After being wounded in a shell explosion, Tomas was left on the battlefield for several weeks before being recovered during a high-risk operation by a Ukrainian special forces unit.

Valentėlis's unit, which consisted mainly of volunteers with no prior combat or military experience, experienced significant losses during the rotation he was part of. Despite this, Valentėlis remained determined to help and find meaning in his service. He spoke openly about his motivation, stating that he came to Ukraine to help and to find a purpose.

However, Valentėlis expressed feelings of demotivation and discussed the corruption he witnessed in the Ukrainian military. Despite these challenges, he continued to serve until his untimely death.

Valentėlis's body will be laid to rest in his hometown of Biržai, northern Lithuania, on Thursday. He will be remembered as a brave individual who made the ultimate sacrifice for a cause he believed in.

According to the latest figures, some 60,000 people, both soldiers and civilians, are missing in Ukraine. Valentėlis's death serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict and the sacrifices being made by individuals like him.

Rest in peace, Tomas Valentėlis. Your bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
