Ukrainian soil now homes a fallen Latvian volunteer
In the heart of Kharkiv, Ukraine, a poignant farewell ceremony was held at the city's crematorium on May 13. The occasion was to bid a final goodbye to a brave Latvian volunteer soldier, who lost his life during a combat mission in the Luhansk region.
Approximately 50 comrades-in-arms, including members from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, gathered to honour the memory of this extraordinary individual. The deceased, who would have turned 28 at the beginning of July, was affectionately known as "Latvian".
"Latvian" had moved to Ukraine in 2017 and became an active member of the Kharkiv Patriotic Activities Movement. His dedication to Ukraine was unwavering, especially after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The farewell ceremony was a poignant blend of Latvian and Ukrainian cultures, with both national flags flying proudly. Ihor Mikhailenko, the deputy commander of the 3rd separate assault brigade, addressed the attendees, expressing his deep condolences and praising the unique personality of "Latvian", who was loved by everyone without exception.
"Latvian" was not just a soldier; he was also an active participant in various social initiatives. One of his most significant contributions was the establishment of the self-defense club "Nord Storm", which operates in 18 cities.
Representatives from the Latvian embassy in Ukraine were present at the farewell, bringing the Latvian flag to cover "Latvian's" coffin. This heartfelt gesture served as a poignant reminder of the international support for Ukraine in its struggle against aggression.
Sadly, "Latvian" is the third Latvian volunteer soldier to be killed during the full-scale Russian invasion. The location of his death was in the Luhansk region, specifically in the village of Novovodyan, Svatovo district.
Despite the tragic circumstances, the memory of "Latvian" will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of the Ukrainian people. His dedication, courage, and selflessness serve as a testament to the power of unity in the face of adversity.
