Zelenskyl to confer with Trump during NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday's agenda - Ukrainian President Zelenskyy arranged a meeting with U.S. President Trump during the NATO summit taking place in The Hague.
Title: Zelensky to Talk Sanctions and Military Aid with Trump at NATO Summit in The Hague
Zelensky is gearing up for a chat with Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague this Wednesday, with a focus on sanctions against Russia, the main catalyst for the conflict in Ukraine since 2022. The agenda also includes capping the price of Russian oil to deprive Moscow of war funds.
Ukraine and its allies are mulling over slashing the oil price cap for Russia from $60 to as low as $30, with the aim of hindering Russia's ability to finance its military efforts. Yet,Trump has so far balked at enforcing additional sanctions against Russia, despite Putin's unwillingness to negotiate a ceasefire with Ukraine.
Besides, arms procurement, particularly air defense systems from the US, is expected to be on the table according to the Kyiv administration. However, Zelensky won't be attending the actual working sessions of the NATO summit.
The summit kicks off on Tuesday evening, heralded by a reception hosted by the Dutch royal couple at the Huis ten Bosch Palace, where Trump is anticipated to make an appearance. Prior to the event, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will catch up with Zelensky and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in the afternoon.
The NATO leaders' consultations will prolong on Wednesday, with NATO members agreeing to invest 3.5% of their respective GDP on defense and 1.5% on defense-related infrastructure by 2035, as proposed by Rutte.
Zelensky's encounter with Trump at the White House in Washington turned sour in late February, resulting in accusations of a lack of respect and gratitude from Trump and US Vice President JD Vance. The clash culminated in Zelensky being escorted out of the White House.
Subsequently, both leaders tempered their remarks. They had a brief encounter on the sidelines of the Pope Francis' funeral in Rome in late April, which attracted much attention. A supposed meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the G7 summit in Canada in mid-June did not materialize, given Trump's sudden departure, purportedly due to the Israel-Iran conflict.
