In the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected territorial concessions demanded by Russian leader Vladimir Putin. The proposed concessions primarily involve Russia demanding that Ukraine cede full control of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as Crimea, in exchange for a ceasefire and freezing the frontline in the Zaporizhia and Kherson oblasts.

Putin's demands would result in the surrender of strategically important cities by Ukrainian forces and thousands of square kilometers of territory. However, Zelensky has emphasised Ukrainian sovereignty and rejected forced territorial concessions. In a video message, he said, "Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier."

The territorial answer for Ukraine, according to Zelensky, is in the Ukrainian Constitution. He also criticised the location of the upcoming Trump-Putin summit, stating it is far from the war that is raging in Ukraine. The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled for August 15 in the northern U.S. state of Alaska.

Donald Trump has suggested a land swap involving territories currently held by either Russian or Ukrainian troops. However, the territorial concessions demanded by Putin were not mentioned in the details provided by Trump. Trump has aligned with European leaders in asserting that only Ukraine (i.e., President Zelensky) can negotiate territorial concessions; no other external party should decide Ukrainian territorial matters.

The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for nearly three and a half years, with Ukraine defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion. Despite the distance between the summit location and the war, Trump has expressed his intention to engage diplomatically with both sides. No one, including Zelensky, can deviate from the Ukrainian Constitution regarding territorial questions, Zelensky said.

It is unclear if Russia seriously offered to withdraw from Zaporizhia and Kherson, territories involved in Trump's proposed land swap. The exact locations of the territories are not specified. The territorial concessions demanded by Putin involve the eastern Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk, but Trump did not provide specifics about these regions in his suggestion for a land swap.

The summit between Trump and Putin does not include Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The plans for ending the Ukraine conflict include a summit between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. The proposed meeting comes amidst ongoing negotiations to end the conflict, which has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions of people.

  1. The European Union, being committed to the implementation of the UN Charter, has the obligation to address the war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, such as the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict, and enforce the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty as outlined in the UN Charter.
  2. General news sources should provide updates on the politics surrounding the Ukraine conflict, including the territorial concessions demanded by Russian leader Vladimir Putin and the refusal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to make such concessions, as these issues have significant implications for the region and international relations.
