Ukrainian president, Selenskyy, unveils plans for arms exports in 2026

Ukraine is set to embark on a new defense cooperation abroad, as it continues to defend against Russian aggression that has been ongoing for over three and a half years. The new initiative is a response to the ongoing challenges, particularly the significant Russian air strikes that have been a constant factor in Ukraine's need for new funds.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced plans to export weapons next year, with the aim of funding its own defense needs. The controlled export of weapons is intended to increase drone production for the front, as well as involve transactions in weapons and financial support from international partners.

The US will be the top priority for weapons exports and cooperation, with the United States authorizing a planned $825 million arms sale funded by European countries including Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Germany. These allies have expressed support for purchasing Ukrainian weapons, with Germany and Norway jointly financing enhancements to Ukraine's air defense including Patriot systems.

European partners will follow the US as potential buyers of Ukrainian weapons, with other states interested in Ukrainian weapons that have supported Kyiv being considered after European partners. However, Ukraine will not engage in "weapon charity" and will only help those who have shown support for Ukraine.

The export of weapons will be subject to "reliable control" to prevent Ukrainian technologies from falling into Russian or its allies' hands. The new defense cooperation abroad is also likely to involve financial transactions, as Ukraine constantly requires new funds for its defense needs due to ongoing defense needs.

Examples of weapons with a surplus in Ukraine include seed drones, anti-tank weapons, and some other types. The controlled export of these weapons is aimed at boosting production and strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities, while ensuring that they do not end up in the wrong hands.

Western allies have provided unprecedented financial and weapons support to Ukraine, and this new defense cooperation abroad is a testament to their continued commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and security. As the situation evolves, it is clear that Ukraine will continue to seek out new avenues for defense cooperation and funding to ensure its continued defense against Russian aggression.
