Ukrainian President Selenskyy discloses planned arms exports for the year 2026

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans for weapons exports in the coming year, aiming to fund Ukraine's own defense needs in the ongoing war against Russia. This decision comes after three and a half years of Russian aggression, during which Ukraine has received unprecedented financial and military support from Western allies.

The planned exports will prioritise the US, European partners, and Ukrainian allies who have supported Kyiv throughout the conflict. Potential next buyers of Ukrainian weapons include Baltic and Scandinavian countries, the UK, and the Netherlands, with a focus on drone production cooperation. Ukraine is considering loosening its current arms export ban to generate revenue for its domestic defense industry and foster such partnerships.

Examples of weapons with surplus in Ukraine include loitering munitions, anti-tank weapons, and other types. Zelenskyy states that controlled export will increase drone production for the front, highlighting the importance of these exports in Ukraine's defense efforts.

However, weapons deliveries to the front and the replenishment of Ukraine's own arsenals remain the top priority. Ukraine will not provide weapons as charity to those who did not support it during the conflict. The export of weapons will be subject to 'reliable control' to prevent them from falling into Russian or allied hands.

An export concept for Ukrainian weapons is set to be developed within the next two weeks. This move is a response to constant Russian air strikes, which necessitate new defense cooperation abroad. The planned weapons exports are intended to fund Ukraine's defense needs, ensuring it can continue to resist Russian aggression.
