Ukrainian Leader Zelenskyy Consuls with Polish President Duda and PM Tusk During Journey to Warsaw
Taking a Stand Together:
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk inked a security cooperation deal in Warsaw, signifying a major milestone in Polish-Ukrainian relations and a collective response to ongoing threats from Russian hostility. The agreement, characterized as concrete mutual commitments rather than hollow pledges, carries significant weight in the context of both nations grappling with the repercussions of Russian aggression.
The press conference commenced with a spontaneous moment of silence at Zelenskyy's request, honoring the victims of a Russian assault on Kyiv. Tusk shared poignant sentiments, acknowledging that every day in Ukraine is marked by innocent lives lost. He recounted a conversation with Zelenskyy about a children's hospital in Kyiv that was deliberately targeted, underlining the inhumanity of the conflict.
"This document means everything," Tusk stated emphatically, emphasizing the practicality and necessity of the accord. He emphasized that 19 other nations, as well as the European Union, have signed similar agreements with Ukraine, underscoring the importance of solidarity and cooperation in the face of shared threats. Tusk reiterated that the outcome of the war will have far-reaching implications not only for Ukraine but also for Poland and the entire Western world.
The security pact entails provisions for training and arming a Ukrainian legion in Poland, enabling Ukrainian residents in Poland to participate in the defense of their homeland. Zelenskyy extended his gratitude for Poland's military backing and discussed potential avenues for future collaboration, particularly in the realm of advanced military aviation.
Zelenskyy also highlighted Poland's substantial military assistance, mentioning that it had provided 44 packages of military support, including weaponry and ammunition, with more on the way before the end of the year. The agreement reaches beyond military defense, addressing cybersecurity and the protection of critical infrastructure against missile threats from Russia.
Tusk assured ongoing backing for Ukraine, incorporating not only military aid but also humanitarian assistance. He flagged concerns about ensuring Poland's security while transferring military assets to Ukraine, such as MiG fighter jets, without weakening NATO defenses.
Looking to the future, Tusk and Zelenskyy will attend a NATO summit in Washington, where Zelenskyy expects tangible steps to bolster Ukraine's air defense capabilities. Tusk reaffirmed Poland's commitment to championing Ukraine's expedited path towards NATO and EU membership, acknowledging the arduous and challenging process.
During the press conference, Zelenskyy also addressed energy security, a critical issue as winter looms. He unveiled plans to fortify and protect Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with Poland playing a vital role in these efforts. Tusk disclosed ongoing negotiations about utilizing Polish coal to generate electricity for Ukraine, providing a temporary yet crucial energy source during the severe winter months.
Tusk also criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's recent trip to Moscow, warning against any attempts to negotiate peace with Russia that do not fully respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He directly addressed Orban, underscoring that a fair and just peace honors Ukraine's choices, including its aspirations to join NATO and the EU.
Following his meeting with Tusk, Zelenskyy proceeded to a separate meeting with Polish President Andrzej Duda. Reveling in the visit, Tusk posted a photo with Zelenskyy on social media, commending his tenacity and courage in the fight for a secure Ukraine and Europe, reaffirming Poland's unwavering support.
