In an open disclosure, Mahmoud Mardawi, a senior Hamas official, has pointed the finger at Israel for the recent demise of ceasefire negotiations in Gaza. According to Mardawi, Israel snubbed previously agreed deals and made last-minute demands that Hamas found unbearable.
Despite weeks of intense talks with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, Hamas agreed to a draft proposal that catered to minimal Palestinian aspirations and civilian protection, said Mardawi in a comprehensive post on X. However, Israel, in response to the U.S. envoy's offer to show the plan to their side, refused further negotiations. Instead, they requested the Americans to send the document back to Hamas, effectively eliminating any chance for debate or revision.
The version that Israel sought had significant blunders that undermined the main objectives of any truce. These flawed elements included the absence of a firm assurance for a permanent halt to military actions, a guaranteed departure from Gaza, promises of continuous humanitarian assistance, and no legally binding commitments over the seventh day of the scheduled ceasefire, when the release of Israeli detainees was anticipated.
Initially, Hamas responded with cautious optimism, disregarding such glaring errors. Mardawi emphasized that although the group accepted the principle, they opposed using it as leverage for more hardship, starvation, and evictions. To ensure an actual cessation of hostilities and provide sustained relief to the displaced, Hamas requested modifications.
Surprisingly, the required modifications were exactly in line with the informal agreement reached with the U.S. ambassador. Despite prior support, Washington labeled Hamas's stance a roadblock and deemed it unacceptable.
Mardawi clarified that Hamas is not sabotaging peace efforts. On the contrary, they are prioritizing human dignity and safeguarding their people. He encouraged international players to focus their pressure on Israel rather than those defending their own.
Insights:
Mahmoud Mardawi's disclosure highlights several issues with Israel's approach to the ceasefire negotiations. Notably, Israel's unwillingness to negotiate or revise the proposed framework, as well as their dismissal of Hamas's concerns for the civilian population in Gaza. Additionally, Israeli officials have expressed concerns about aid distribution, preferring private contractors over international organizations, which they accuse of being manipulated by Hamas. Should their objectives not be met, Israel has considered escalating military operations in Gaza, according to some hardliners.
