Ukrainian special forces again launch attacks on Volgograd oil refinery

Ukrainian elite military units have struck the Volgograd oil refinery once more.

In a significant development, Ukrainian Special Forces carried out an attack on the Volgograd Oil Refinery in Russia on September 18, 2025. This strategic target, a key supplier of fuel to the Russian army, has been taken out of commission due to the attack.

The Volgograd Oil Refinery, located within Russia, was processing 15.7 million tons of oil annually, accounting for 5.6% of Russia's total refining capacity prior to the attack. The refinery's shutdown, following intense fires on its premises, has resulted in the loss of at least 17% of Russia's oil refining capacity, or 1.1 million barrels per day.

This attack is part of a series of actions by Ukraine aimed at disrupting Russia's military resource supplies. On the same day, drones also successfully targeted the "Gazprom" petrochemical complex in the city of Salavat, approximately 1500 km from the Ukrainian border.

The Volgograd Oil Refinery has been a target before. Preliminary reports indicate that it was hit by drone attacks on August 14 and 19, 2025, causing major fires and halting operations.

The Volgograd Oil Refinery's strategic importance lies in its role as a key supplier of fuel for the Russian army, particularly for logistics and combat operations. The refinery's shutdown is expected to have a significant impact on Russia's military capabilities.

The attack on the Volgograd Oil Refinery was reported by the Telegram channel of the Special Operations Forces. The Ukrainian Special Forces have taken responsibility for the strike, stating it as part of a series of Ukrainian attacks on major Russian oil refining facilities in 2025.

As the situation continues to evolve, the impact of these attacks on Russia's oil supply and military capabilities remains to be seen. However, it is clear that these actions are having a significant impact on Russia's strategic resources.
