Ukrainian drone attacks trigger series of explosions reported
In a series of escalating events, multiple regions in Russia have been affected by recent Ukrainian drone strikes, causing casualties, damages, and disruptions to infrastructure.
According to Rostov Governor Yuri Slyusar, a man lost his life while guarding an unnamed company building during a drone strike in the Rostov region. Three other lives were claimed in these attacks, with a woman killed in Penza during a strike on business premises, and an elderly man in Samara who perished when falling drone debris caused a house fire. Two others were wounded in Penza as well [1][4].
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that 112 drones were intercepted or destroyed across eight Russian regions and Crimea during these attacks [1][2]. Ukrainian forces allegedly targeted military and industrial facilities, including an air base storing Shahed drones in Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Elektroprylad military plant in Penza [2].
The attacks disrupted key infrastructure. In occupied Crimea, the Kerch Bridge was blocked for over five hours, and explosions were heard in Feodosia and Kerch [2]. The Samara region's airport temporarily suspended takeoffs and landings due to the drone threat, and mobile internet shutdowns were reported after industrial facility strikes in Novokuybyshevsk, Samara region [2].
Explosions were reported at oil processing facilities in Samara, Penza, and Ryazan, with a large explosion and fireball seen in a video from an oil processing plant near Samara on the Volga [1]. Ukrainian leadership has stated that it is focusing drone strikes on Russia's military logistics, including fuel depots, ammunition storage facilities, and transportation routes [3].
Authorities in Samara, Penza, and Ryazan confirmed drone attacks but provided no details, while Governor Pavel Malcov of Ryazan asked residents not to share images to avoid aiding the enemy [2]. A plant producing components for rocket control systems was allegedly targeted in Penza, but there was no official confirmation [1].
The reciprocal aggression has also been evident on the Ukrainian side, with casualty reports from the Kharkiv region including wounded civilians from drone strikes [1]. As tensions rise, calls for ceasefire negotiations have become increasingly urgent.
