In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian leadership has escalated their tactics by focusing on drone strikes against Russian rear military logistics and key industrial facilities.

On August 2, 2025, Ukrainian drones targeted several crucial oil processing plants in Russia, causing significant fires but reportedly limiting immediate casualties. The oil refineries in Ryazan and Novokuibyshevsk (Samara Oblast) were hit, with videos showing large fires at these sites.

The Ryazan strike involved an oil refinery where emergency crews responded to drone debris and fire, while in Samara, the Novokuibyshevsk oil refinery was confirmed to be on fire following a drone attack. Additionally, a major oil storage site in the Voronezh region was targeted.

Besides oil facilities, Ukraine targeted the Elektropribor electronics plant in Penza, which is alleged to produce equipment for the Russian defense industry, including military command systems and aviation devices. A military drone airbase in Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Krasnodar Krai, used for storing and launching Shahed drones, was also hit and caught fire.

Regarding casualties, Ukrainian reports highlight that Russian strikes killed three people in Kherson, Ukraine, on the same day as their drone attacks. However, there is no confirmed information about casualties resulting directly from the drone strikes on Russian territory. Russian regional officials have mostly confirmed the attacks and fires but have not detailed human losses, focusing on damage control and emergency response.

The Samara region's airport temporarily suspended takeoffs and landings due to the drone threat. Governor Pavel Malkov of the Ryazan region asked not to publish images to avoid aiding the enemy. Explosions have been reported in oil processing facilities in Samara, Penza, and Ryazan. Two people have been reported killed in drone attacks in the Penza and Rostov regions.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down over 100 Ukrainian drones, but there were no reports of damages or casualties in the affected areas due to the downed drones.

In summary, Ukrainian drone strikes significantly impacted Russian oil processing infrastructure and certain military-industrial sites in early August 2025, causing fires and operational disruption, although public casualty details from these strikes within Russia remain limited.
