In the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, a new front has emerged – drone warfare. Since May 2025, Ukraine has been launching a series of drone attacks on Russian regions, targeting industrial and military facilities, causing notable damage, disruption, and casualties.

The most significant strikes were reported on August 1-2, 2025. These attacks targeted a Shahed drone storage base and a military plant in Primorsko-Akhtarsk (Krasnodar Krai), an oil refinery in Ryazan, the Elektroprylad military plant in Penza, and the Novokuibyshevsky oil refinery in Samara Oblast. The attacks resulted in fires, temporary Internet blackouts, airport closures, and at least one civilian death due to debris from intercepted drones. Explosions and fires were also reported in Lipetsk, Voronezh, and occupied Crimea, including disruptions to the Kerch Bridge, a key connection between Crimea and Russia.

The Ukrainian military and security services have confirmed these strikes, emphasizing the targeting of logistical and industrial infrastructure crucial to the Russian military effort. The General Staff of Ukraine highlighted the strategic importance of hitting facilities such as drone storage sites where Russia stores Shahed drones captured or acquired from Iran.

Russian authorities have confirmed the attacks and reported extensive counter-drone operations, claiming the destruction or interception of over 100 drones in some operations. However, the drone strikes have caused enough disruption that some civilian infrastructure in Russia had to suspend operations temporarily.

These continuous drone attacks form part of a larger strategy by Ukraine to degrade Russia's war capabilities and morale amid a protracted conflict that includes both ground fighting and aerial campaigns. On the Russian side, defense officials emphasize the interception and neutralization of many drones, framing the attacks as provocations.

Official responses include Ukrainian statements highlighting successful strikes and reinforcing their strategy to weaken Russian military logistics and capabilities. On the Russian side, political and military leaders have reportedly taken measures to mitigate the impacts by restricting civil aviation and enhancing air defenses in affected regions.

Notable incidents include the death of two individuals in the Penza and Rostov regions due to drone attacks, explosions in oil processing facilities in Samara, Penza, and Ryazan, and a video circulating on social media showing a large explosion and fireball at an oil processing plant near Samara on the Volga.

As the conflict continues, both sides are framing the drone engagements as a critical front in the war. The high-intensity, multifaceted nature of the current phase of the Russia-Ukraine war is evident in these continuous strikes and official responses.
