Ukrainian Diver Arrested in Poland Over Nord Stream Sabotage
Ukrainian national Wolodymyr Z. has been arrested in Poland on suspicion of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord pipelines. He is to be extradited to Germany, where he faces charges of causing an explosion with explosives and treasonous sabotage. The arrest comes over a year after a European arrest warrant was issued by the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany. Wolodymyr Z., a Ukrainian diver, is suspected of being part of the group that placed explosive devices near the island of Bornholm on the Nord pipelines. The attack in 2022 caused severe damage, halting gas transportation through the pipelines. Polish authorities have applied for a seven-day detention order for Wolodymyr Z. as they prepare for his extradition to Germany. The extradition process can take several weeks or months. This is not the first attempt to arrest Wolodymyr Z. in Poland. A previous attempt in 2024 failed when he fled to Ukraine. It is unclear when Wolodymyr Z. re-entered Poland from Ukraine before his recent arrest. Wolodymyr Z. was arrested in Warsaw in the early morning hours of September 30, 2025, and was subsequently questioned by police. His extradition to Germany will follow, where he will be brought before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice. The arrest of Wolodymyr Z. is a significant development in the investigation into the sabotage of the Nord pipelines.
