Ukrainian authorities surrender control over two settlements located in Sumy region
The Ukraine-Russia conflict, now in its sixth year, remains active with ongoing offensive operations primarily focused in eastern Ukraine, particularly in Donetsk Oblast. Despite Russian forces making incremental territorial gains, rapid breakthroughs have been elusive.
According to former German Ambassador to Russia, Rüdiger von Fritsch, Russian leader Vladimir Putin is playing for time, and any territorial concession by Ukraine to Russia would be a "fatal abandonment" of existing international law norms. This viewpoint underscores the complex dynamics of the conflict, which are centred on eastern Ukraine's contested urban and fortified zones.
In the Sumy region, there is no recent mention of major new Russian advances or operations, with the conflict concentrated mostly around long-term contested towns in eastern oblasts like Donetsk and Kharkiv. Russian forces have struggled for months or years to fully encircle or seize key towns such as Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast and Toretsk and Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast, with advances taking many months to cover small distances.
From mid-July to mid-August 2025, Russian forces reportedly gained about 241 square miles of Ukrainian territory, representing a slight increase from the prior period. However, these gains have not led to any significant changes in the overall conflict situation.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, but Russia's demands remain firm on controlling Donbass, indicating no imminent peace agreement. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has rejected speculations about possible territorial concessions by Ukraine for peace with Russia, stating, "Violence must not redraw borders."
Meanwhile, Russia has reportedly conducted initial tests to shut down video and audio calls on WhatsApp and Telegram, causing disruptions for users across Russia. Downdetector registered nearly 7,500 reports of Telegram issues, with most users reporting problems with audio and video calls.
The conflict has also taken a toll on civilians, with Russian long-range strikes causing civilian casualties. A Russian air force bombing in the Belgorod region was reported by the Ukrainian intelligence service HUR, with recordings of calls from Russian citizens indicating the bombing of residential areas.
Economically, the conflict has impacted Russia significantly. For instance, the shutdown of a Rosneft facility, with a processing capacity of 140,000 barrels of crude oil per day, could affect the country’s gasoline supply if the shutdown continues. The facility was reportedly targeted in a Ukrainian drone attack, resulting in one death and injuries.
In a bid to improve relations with the USA, Russia hopes that the meeting between Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, taking place in Alaska, will be fruitful. However, some Russian nationalists have claimed Alaska for themselves, referring to it as the "Ice Crimea".
The future of Ukraine, according to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, should be shaped by freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination. They agree that peace cannot be imposed on Ukraine and it must be achieved together with the government in Kyiv.
In a positive development, Ukraine has reportedly retaken two settlements in the border region of Sumy: Stepne and Nowokostyantynivka. This small victory underscores the resilience of the Ukrainian forces in the face of ongoing conflict.
As the conflict continues, diplomatic efforts will likely remain the focus, with both sides seeking a resolution that respects their respective interests and upholds international law.
