Ukrainian artist David Chichkan, known for his stand against censorship, tragically lost his life at the age of 39 while battling in a conflict.
David Chichkan, a prominent Ukrainian artist known for his political work, passed away tragically in 2025 at the age of 39, following injuries sustained in battle against Russian troops. His art was a reflection of his anarchist beliefs and anti-authoritarian views, often critiquing Ukraine's political landscape and championing themes of freedom and equality.
A Life Dedicated to Art and Activism
Born in Kyiv in 1986 to a family of artists, Chichkan's artistic journey began early. He founded the Libertarian Club of Underground Dialectics in 2014, an artist collective that produced work critiquing right-wing ideologies and efforts to combat them.
Chichkan's art often appropriated and subverted Ukrainian culture, using symbols and themes to express his anarchist and Communist beliefs. His exhibitions, such as "Ribbons and Triangles" and "Lost Opportunity," were not without controversy, with right-wing activists vandalizing his works and conservative groups criticizing his interpretations of the Ukrainian flag and traditional symbols.
The Maidan Revolution and Its Impact
The Maidan revolution, a protest against President Viktor Yanukovych's decision not to sign a trade agreement with the European Union in 2013, was a significant influence on Chichkan's work. He saw the revolution as a transformative event and often used it as a backdrop for his critiques of Ukrainian society. His art focused on themes of freedom and equality, with elements of minority rights, supporting communities like the Roma and LGBTQ+ individuals.
A Soldier in the Ukrainian Armed Forces
Despite his anarchist beliefs, Chichkan enlisted in the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2024 to fight against Russian aggression. He saw Russia as a modern embodiment of fascism and was committed to resisting it. His decision to join the military was consistent with his anti-fascist and anti-imperialist views, viewing the conflict as a necessary action to protect Ukraine.
Tragically, Chichkan was killed in action during a combat mission in the Zaporizhzhia region in August 2025. His death has been deeply felt in Ukraine's artistic community, marking a profound loss not only to his family but also to the cultural identity of Ukraine.
A Lasting Legacy
Chichkan's legacy continues to inspire through his art, which remains a powerful symbol of resistance and political activism. His work, including his series "Alternative Hryvnias" and his watercolors on Instagram depicting soldiers with antiauthoritarian views, continues to resonate with many in Ukraine and beyond.
In 2021, Chichkan began a series called "Alternative Hryvnias," reproducing Ukrainian banknotes with figures like Mykhailo Drahomanov, a 19th-century economist whose socialist theories informed Ukraine's 1991 political constitution. This series, like much of Chichkan's work, was a bold statement against the status quo and a call for a more equitable and democratic society.
