Wagenknecht and AfD Oppose Deployment of German Troops to Ukraine

Sahra Wagenknecht, the chairwoman of the Left party (Die Linke), has publicly stated her opposition to the deployment of German peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. She argues that sending Bundeswehr soldiers would make Germany directly involved in the war, a scenario she deems unacceptable due to historical reasons and the risk of escalating the conflict.

Wagenknecht's stance is shared by the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD), who also reject sending troops, framing it as an escalation of conflict with Russia. The AfD strongly warns against such a move, stating that it would lead to permanent escalation with Russia and refusing to send German soldiers to Ukraine.

While the ruling coalition led by Chancellor Merz (CDU/CSU) has not made a definitive decision, Merz indicated the possibility of involvement is under discussion but would require parliamentary approval and coalition consensus. Michael Kretschmer, Minister-President of Saxony, has also voiced his opposition to the deployment of Bundeswehr to Ukraine.

Wagenknecht has criticized Chancellor Merz for prioritizing military aid and funds for Ukraine over domestic welfare, framing this as neglect of German citizens' interests. She has further considered Friedrich Merz's suggestion to deploy German soldiers to Ukraine as a serious mistake.

In a discussion in Washington, Merz suggested the deployment of German soldiers to Ukraine as a possible option in Western security guarantees. However, Wagenknecht proposes that if the black-red coalition plans to send German soldiers to Ukraine, Merz should ask the people through a nationwide referendum.

Public opinion in Germany is divided, showing a split over the idea of peacekeeping missions in Ukraine, with concerns about escalation and historical sensitivities influencing skepticism. Russia, too, strongly opposes any NATO troop deployments in Ukraine, warning that such actions could cause uncontrollable escalation.
