Zelensky calls for a summit involving Trump and Putin - Ukraine's President Zelenskyy suggests a three-way meeting with Trump and Putin
In the aftermath of the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is pushing for a trilateral meeting with both leaders. The proposed meeting, which is also supported by European leaders, is intended to bring about security guarantees for Ukraine as a key step towards peace.
According to Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor in Zelensky's office, an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" is a critical criterion from Ukraine's perspective. Hard pressure will be exerted if the ceasefire is not implemented within an hour, Podolyak warned.
The Alaska summit on August 15, 2025, did not produce a ceasefire or concrete progress on ending the war. Instead, it focused on listening and the potential for future talks. Trump indicated a desire to accelerate negotiations and move quickly toward peace, including seeking a direct peace agreement with no long delays. However, the U.S. side declined to discuss economic incentives for Russia given the absence of progress on the war issue.
Ukraine's position for the trilateral meeting involves ensuring security guarantees—meaning firm commitments to Ukraine’s defense and sovereignty—without premature ceasefire calls that Russia demands. The trilateral meeting, if it occurs, will involve Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky believes that real solutions can only be found in this trilateral format. The location of these negotiations is the US state of Alaska. It is not clear what the outcome of the trilateral meeting, if it occurs, would be. However, Ukraine and its Western allies want to avoid outcomes that could overly favor Russia or undermine Ukraine’s position.
