Ukraine's president, Zelenskyy, states prior to Trump and Putin's encounter, there seems to be no evidence indicating Russia's intent to halt the ongoing war.
In a significant diplomatic event, President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, with the specific goal of initiating a ceasefire and seeking a peaceful resolution to Russia's ongoing assault on Ukraine.
The meeting, which was the first face-to-face encounter between the two leaders since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, was primarily focused on finding a way to end the conflict. President Trump aimed to set in motion a ceasefire agreement during the summit.
However, despite nearly three hours of talks, the meeting did not yield a ceasefire or any concrete agreements. Russian forces continued attacks during the meeting itself, with Putin remaining firm on his position and not agreeing to pause military actions.
Both leaders suggested the possibility of further talks, possibly in Moscow, but no firm commitments were made. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that there is no sign Russia is preparing to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump has been light on specifics about what he hopes to achieve from the in-person talks with Putin. He has expressed a desire for a ceasefire and the best possible deal for both parties involved in the Ukraine war. However, he has also stated that he is not solely responsible for making a deal with Putin.
The Ukrainian President has emphasized the need for coordinated efforts and joint actions from Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and all countries that seek peace to compel Russia to make peace. He has also emphasized the importance of joint approaches and a shared vision towards genuine peace, ceasefire, end of occupation, and end of war.
This meeting follows seemingly positive calls between the two leaders, which only resulted in continued Russian bombardment of Ukraine. The Ukrainian President has emphasized the need for pressure to be exerted on Russia for the sake of a just peace.
