In the heart of Europe, a series of crucial summits are underway, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berlin for high-stakes meetings. The centrepiece of these gatherings is the upcoming meeting between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the first since before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The upcoming talks aim to bolster support for Ukraine and build influence with President Trump before his meeting with Putin on Friday. The discussions are shrouded in uncertainty, with concerns about Ukraine's territorial integrity and Europe's security framework taking centre stage.

European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta has welcomed President Trump's efforts to reach peace for Ukraine. However, the core concerns revolve around Ukraine's territorial integrity, particularly the Donbas region, and the implications for European security and alliances. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has firmly opposed surrendering any sovereign territory, as Ukraine's constitution forbids it, insisting that Ukraine itself must decide its borders. Russia, on the other hand, demands to be part of security guarantee discussions and focuses on retaining control over mineral-rich and industrially vital areas like Donetsk in the Donbas region.

Jarmo Makela, a veteran Finnish political commentator, expresses deep fears, particularly for countries that have lost territory to Russia in the past, such as Finland, which had to give up 12% of its land in a peace deal with Moscow after World War II. Makela fears that the outcome could mirror the 1938 Munich Agreement, with Putin taking more territory after making promises not to. He warns that any U.S.-Russia "land swap" deal could set the stage for the Kremlin's next move.

The Baltic countries and Poland are most prepared for immediate confrontation, according to Makela. Finland and the Nordic countries are preparing for war, but do not expect it to take place immediately. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with President Zelenskyy ahead of the summits, and the meetings involve President Zelenskyy, Vice President JD Vance, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, leaders from Finland, France, Italy, Poland, the U.K., and the EU.

President Trump is pushing for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy to initiate direct talks, followed possibly by a trilateral meeting including himself. He emphasizes urgency in these negotiations to stop further bloodshed, urging flexibility from all sides and rallying European allies to provide security guarantees for Ukraine. However, Russia remains skeptical about the meetings, and Moscow has not confirmed a Putin-Zelenskyy summit yet.

Potential outcomes include a conflict between Russia's insistence on retaining Donbas or other Ukrainian territories and Ukraine’s constitutional stance, which could provoke further tension or a stalled peace process. European relations might be affected depending on how security guarantees are structured; European partners are expected to play a key role in backing Ukraine’s security, but Russia's involvement in negotiations complicates this. A successful meeting could pave the way for negotiations that reduce hostilities and ultimately lead to peace talks with commitments on both sides, although this depends on the willingness of Putin and Zelenskyy to compromise.

Zelenskyy accused Putin of seeking to dominate Ukraine because "he does not want a sovereign Ukraine." He has been firm in his stance that Ukraine's territorial integrity must be respected. As the talks unfold, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and preserves Europe's security framework.
