In a significant development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans for weapons exports in the coming year. According to Zelenskyy, these exports will aim to finance Ukraine's own defense needs in the ongoing war against Russia.

The USA, European partners, and other states interested in Ukrainian weapons that have supported Kyiv are top priorities for exports. However, the export of weapons will be subject to 'reliable control' to prevent them from falling into Russian or allied hands.

Zelenskyy stated that controlled exports will increase drone production for the frontier. Weapons deliveries to the frontier and the buildup of domestic arsenals remain the top priority for Ukraine.

Examples of surplus weapons mentioned by Zelenskyy include loitering munitions, anti-tank weapons, and some other types. These surplus weapons, despite being destined for export, will still be among those to be produced domestically, as the domestic production of certain weapons already exceeds domestic demand in Ukraine.

Kyiv is planning new defense cooperation abroad due to constant Russian air strikes. However, it has been noted that recent discussions focus more on Ukraine receiving weapons and support from countries like the USA, Poland, Slovakia, the Netherlands, and Denmark, rather than these countries importing Ukrainian arms.

Ukraine will not provide weapons to those who did not support it during the conflict. An export concept for weapons is to be worked out within the next two weeks, but as of now, no specific states have been publicly reported as showing interest in importing weapons from Ukraine.

The aim of weapons exports is to finance Ukraine's own defense needs in the war against Russia. The focus of Ukraine's defense efforts remains the frontier and the buildup of domestic arsenals. Zelenskyy emphasised that the increase in drone production and the exports of surplus weapons are steps towards ensuring a reliable defense for Ukraine.
