Ukraine's President Selenskyy declares plans for weapon exports in 2026

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced plans for weapons exports in the coming year, aiming to finance the country's arms needs in the defensive war against Russia.

In a recent statement, Zelenskyy highlighted that controlled weapons exports will increase the production of drones for the front, as well as other types of surplus weapons, such as anti-tank weapons and seed drones. This move comes as Ukraine has been under Russian invasion for over three and a half years, with the support of Western allies in the form of financial aid and weapons deliveries.

Zelenskyy emphasised that Ukraine will not provide 'weapon charity' to those who did not support Ukraine. Instead, the export of Ukrainian weapons is a means to finance the country's arms needs.

Kyiv is planning new arms cooperation abroad due to constant Russian air attacks and the need for constant new financial resources. The production of drones for the front is expected to increase significantly with controlled weapons exports.

The export of Ukrainian weapons is subject to 'reliable control' to prevent them from falling into the hands of Russia or its allies. Domestic production of certain weapons in Ukraine already exceeds the country's own needs, making exports a viable option.

Ukraine plans to work out an export concept for weapons within the next two weeks. The European partners with whom Ukraine plans to conduct arms exports in the next year are mentioned generally as European partners, but specific countries are not named. The priority order is first the USA, second European partners, and third other states interested in Ukrainian weapons.

Zelenskyy stated that controlled weapons exports will help increase the production of drones for the front, which will be crucial in the ongoing defensive war against Russia. The President reiterated that Ukraine's priority remains the delivery of weapons to the front and the replenishment of Ukraine's own arsenals.
