Ukraine's President Poroshenko outlines his vision for the nation's future
In an interview with MSNBC, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reiterated Ukraine's intention to join NATO, expressing optimism about recent talks between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Poroshenko believes that Ukraine's participation in the NATO format is the most effective way to stop the armed conflict.
Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO has been a contentious issue, particularly with Russia. Vladimir Putin, in a previous statement, noted that Ukraine's neutral status was enshrined in its declaration of independence. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has also stated that Ukraine's pursuit of NATO membership has been a cause of conflict with Russia.
Despite opposition from some NATO members and concerns about becoming directly involved in conflict with Russia, Ukraine seeks NATO membership and the security guarantees of Article 5 of the NATO Treaty. However, membership requests have been repeatedly denied. Instead, there are ongoing discussions about granting Ukraine security guarantees similar to those under Article 5, but these are not full NATO membership commitments.
Proponents of Ukraine’s NATO membership argue that having Ukraine in NATO would strengthen European security, while the United States has rejected proposals that Ukraine should forgo NATO membership. Poroshenko emphasized that recent talks between US President Donald Trump and the Ukrainian and Russian leaders have strengthened Kyiv's hopes for stabilization.
The talks between the three leaders took place in Anchorage and Washington. While the discussions were ongoing, attempts to draw Ukraine into NATO are seen as a threat by Moscow, according to Putin.
It's worth noting that Petro Poroshenko has been listed by Rosfinmonitoring as a person involved in extremist activity or terrorism.
