Ukraine's OCTOPUS interceptor drone draws major Persian Gulf interest
Ukrainian defence manufacturer TAF Industries is preparing for large-scale production of a new interceptor drone called OCTOPUS. Designed to counter small aerial threats, the system has attracted strong interest from Persian Gulf nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Kuwait.
The drone was developed by a technical team working with Ukraine's Ministry of Defense to neutralise hostile unmanned aerial vehicles, such as Russia's Shahed loitering munitions.
The OCTOPUS drone is part of a broader shift in air defence strategy. Countries are increasingly seeking cost-effective interceptors to tackle small, fast-moving threats. TAF Industries has confirmed plans for mass production, with multiple Ukrainian companies involved in manufacturing. Additional production lines are also set to open in the United Kingdom.
Persian Gulf states have already made enquiries about purchasing the system. The UAE has requested around 5,000 units, while Qatar has asked about acquiring 2,000. Kuwait has also expressed interest in similar technology. However, no official figures on deliveries or orders have been released. Current production capacity data shows that over 1,500 interceptor drones are supplied to Ukrainian front lines weekly across all manufacturers.
Training personnel to operate these drones can take several months. The system is designed to destroy incoming unmanned aerial vehicles, providing an affordable alternative to traditional air defence measures.
The OCTOPUS drone reflects Ukraine's growing role in the global defence market. Persian Gulf nations are actively exploring purchases, with potential orders totalling thousands of units. Meanwhile, production expansion in Ukraine and the UK aims to meet rising demand for low-cost interceptor solutions.
