The European Union has announced its 19th sanctions package, aimed at increasing pressure on Russia and limiting its ability to fund its war in Ukraine. The new measures focus on additional sectors beyond energy, finance, high-tech inputs, and the military-industrial base, extending to luxury goods and yachts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed the EU's decision, calling it an 'important step' to increase pressure on Moscow. In a statement on Telegram, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the EU's actions and praised their leadership and unity.

One of the key measures in the sanctions package is the limitation of Russia's ability to sell oil and gas to non-European countries. The EU also aims to use frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine's defense and recovery.

The sanctions package includes travel bans and asset freezes for additional Russian officials, as well as restrictions on Russian banks' ability to raise funds in the EU. The EU has also imposed a ban on the export of certain dual-use goods to Russia, and measures to prevent Russian ships from accessing EU ports.

The EU's sanctions package also targets Russia's luxury goods and yacht industry, and includes a ban on the export of advanced technology to the Russian defense sector. The measures also aim to restrict Russia's access to global financial markets.

The sanctions package extends the ban on Russian state-owned broadcaster RT and Sputnik from European Union territory. Most EU member states have expressed support for the sanctions package, but Hungary and Slovakia, reliant on Russian gas and oil, may block it. The package is expected to be adopted imminently, with discussions in the Brussels Council scheduled for the week of September 22, 2025.

Zelenskyy has urged other partners to mirror and expand the steps taken in the EU's 19th sanctions package. The Ukrainian President stressed that sustained pressure is crucial to force Russia towards peace and accountability.
