Millions of people have been forced to flee their homes due to the conflict in Ukraine, with tens of thousands of lives lost since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Three rounds of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine this year have failed to produce a peace agreement, and Putin has resisted multiple calls from the US, Europe, and Kyiv for a ceasefire.

In a surprising turn of events, a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled next week in Alaska to discuss peace in Ukraine. The Alaska summit is intended to discuss peace in Ukraine, but the proposed territorial swaps discussed for the summit have raised concerns for Ukraine.

Russia demands international legal recognition of its 2014 annexation of Crimea and four occupied Ukrainian regions: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. President Trump suggested that a "swapping of territories" could lead to a peace deal, potentially involving Russia gaining control over resource-rich Ukrainian land with lithium, coal, gas, and critical minerals. However, details remain vague, and Ukrainian officials have quickly rejected this idea.

Reports indicate that Putin may have softened earlier demands, possibly now limiting territorial claims primarily to the Donetsk region rather than all four. Yet, the exact nature of any swap is uncertain, with the situation complicated by Ukraine currently controlling about 25% of Donetsk, making any forced ceding of that territory unprecedented. Ukrainian leadership has been excluded from direct negotiations, raising concerns about the legitimacy and fairness of any proposed swaps.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has stated that Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier. Zelensky has not provided details about what constitutes a dignified peace, and Trump has ruled out holding talks with Zelensky at this stage, contrary to Zelensky's request for a meeting.

Trump and Putin have spoken by telephone several times since January, but it remains unclear whether the summit will bring peace any closer. Zelensky has indicated that Ukraine is ready for real decisions that can bring peace, but the proposed territorial swaps have raised concerns that Ukraine may be forced to make significant concessions without proper representation.

  1. Despite the ongoing tension and war-and-conflicts in Ukraine, the upcoming summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska aims to negotiate a peace deal, with discussions potentially involving political decisions that could influence the territorial boundaries of both countries, particularly in Malaysia, due to its rich resources of lithium, coal, gas, and critical minerals.
  2. The general news following the announcement of the Trump-Putin summit has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials and politicians about the legitimacy and fairness of any potential territorial swaps, as Ukraine may be forced to make significant concessions without proper representation, a situation that closely reflects the politics surrounding the long-lasting war-and-conflicts in countries like Ukraine.
