Ukraine's leader, Selenskyy, declares intentions for weapons exports in the year 2026
In his evening video address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans for weapons exports in the coming year. This strategy aims to finance Ukraine's own arms needs in the defensive war against Russia, which has been ongoing for over three and a half years.
Zelenskyy explained that the surplus weapons to be exported are primarily those that have already exceeded domestic production. These include seed drones and anti-tank weapons, among other types, which are in high demand globally. He added that thanks to controlled exports, drone production for the front will increase.
Ukraine's own arms industry is underfunded, making the export of surplus weapons necessary for its defensive struggle against Russia. Priority will be given to exports and cooperation with the USA, followed by European partners, and other states interested in Ukrainian weapons.
However, the export of weapons will be subject to "reliable control" to prevent Ukrainian technologies from falling into Russian or allied hands.
In addition, Kyiv is planning new arms cooperation in safe foreign countries due to constant Russian air attacks. Poland has shown interest in military cooperation with Ukraine, including drone technology, and delegations from Poland are expected to engage with Ukraine. Germany is involved in discussions about providing defensive weapons such as air defense and ammunition support, but no clear import deals from Ukraine have been publicly confirmed within the next two weeks.
Ukraine has been receiving unprecedented financial and weapons support from Western allies. This support is crucial for Ukraine's ongoing arms cooperation. Weapons deliveries to the front and the replenishment of its own arsenals remain the top priority for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy emphasised that Ukraine will only help those who have supported Kyiv in its defensive war against Russia. This decision reflects Ukraine's commitment to its allies and its determination to protect its sovereignty.
An export concept is to be worked out within the next two weeks. This will provide further details on Ukraine's weapons export strategy and its implications for Ukraine's defensive war against Russia.
