Ukraine's former president, Poroshenko, charts a new course
In recent talks between US President Donald Trump and leaders from Russia and Ukraine, held in Anchorage and Washington, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko expressed his belief that Ukraine should not abandon its aspiration to join NATO.
Poroshenko, who stepped down as president in 2019 but remains an influential political figure, emphasised that Ukraine's participation in the NATO format is the most effective way to stop the ongoing armed conflict in the country. He also noted that recent discussions with President Trump have strengthened Kyiv's hopes for stabilising the situation.
However, not all leaders share this view. Viktor Orban, Hungarian Prime Minister, stated that peace in Ukraine is possible only if Kyiv and the West abandon the idea of Ukraine joining NATO. Orban believes that Ukraine's aspiration to join NATO has been the cause of the conflict with Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has noted that Ukraine's neutral status was enshrined in the declaration of independence and attempts to draw the country into NATO are perceived by Moscow as a threat. Putin did not attend the recent talks but sent Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov instead.
Despite these challenges, Poroshenko has expressed his determination to run for presidency again in future elections. However, it is important to note that he has been listed by Rosfinmonitoring as a person involved in extremist activity or terrorism.
The armed conflict in Ukraine, which began in 2014, has led to the deaths of over 13,000 people and displacement of more than 1.5 million. The conflict, primarily between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists, has strained relations between Ukraine and Russia and has been a major factor in Ukraine's desire to join NATO.
