Ukraine's drone strike ignites Oil Depot Fire in Russia's Sochi, according to the governor's statement

In a persistent and escalating tactic, Ukrainian drone strikes have been repeatedly targeting Russian oil depots and infrastructure since mid-2024, causing significant damage and disruptions. The latest attack, reported on Sunday, targeted an oil depot in Sochi, Russia.

According to regional Governor Veniamin Kondratyev, the fire at the oil depot was sparked by a Ukrainian drone attack. The Krasnodar region, which houses the Ilsky refinery, has been a frequent target of these drone attacks. The attack in the Adler district of Sochi resulted in the death of a woman, and four people were injured in a separate incident in the Voronezh region.

The Russian defense ministry reported destroying 18 Ukrainian drones over the Voronezh region, while more than 120 firefighters are attempting to extinguish the fire at the oil depot in Sochi. Rosaviatsia, Russia's civil aviation authority, temporarily halted flights at Sochi's airport due to safety concerns. Flights resumed as of 0200 GMT on Sunday, according to a statement on Telegram by Rosaviatsia.

However, no independent verification of the incidents in the Adler district, Voronezh region, or Kyiv has been provided. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the incidents in the Krasnodar region or Voronezh region. Reuters could not independently verify the reports about the incident.

This is the latest Ukrainian attack on infrastructure inside Russia deemed crucial to Moscow's war efforts. The attacks have targeted oil refineries, storage depots, and fuel supplies across multiple Russian regions, including Krasnodar Krai (notably near Sochi), Tambov, Adygea, Kaluga, and others. The strikes have caused significant fires, damage to fuel storage facilities, and disruptions to military logistics, with some incidents also resulting in civilian casualties.

Ukrainian drone attacks have been increasingly frequent, with dozens to over a hundred drones launched during some operations, reflecting Ukraine’s expanding long-range drone strike capability and focus on Russian energy and military logistics targets. The Russian defense ministry only reports how many drones its units destroy, not how many Ukraine launches. On the night of the latest attack, the Russian defense ministry claimed to have destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones, including one over the Krasnodar region and 60 over the Black Sea.

These persistent attacks have generated significant damage to fuel supplies that sustain Russian military operations while also forcing Russia to divert air defenses and civil resources to protect critical energy sites. The attacks are part of a broader Ukrainian campaign against Russia’s energy infrastructure, considered crucial to Russian military operations.
